What’s a food hang?
A food hang is any time you get together with friends, family, neighbors, lovers, anyone you enjoy spending time with… for the specific purpose of having a great time hanging out with great food and drink.
“One of the very nicest things about life is the way we must regularly stop whatever it is we are doing and devote our attention to eating.” ~Luciano Pavarotti
Food is so primal, so essential a part of our lives, often the mere sharing of recipes with strangers turns them into good friends. It is also a profoundly social urge. Food is almost always shared; people eat together; mealtimes are events when the whole family or settlement or village comes together. Food is also an occasion for sharing, for distributing and giving, for the expression of altruism, whether from parents to children, children to in-laws, or anyone to visitors and strangers. All animals eat, but we are the only animal that cooks. So cooking becomes more than a necessity, it is the symbol of our humanity, what marks us off from the rest of nature. And because eating is almost always a group event, food becomes a focus of symbolic activity about sociality. (Robin Fox, Social Issues Research Centre)
In almost every social setting, food is involved. In some circumstances, like holidays, food is the central focus. In others, such as getting together to watch a football game with friends, it’s a tertiary focus – after watching the game and drinking beer. Whatever the circumstances, there’s always good eats.
We are lucky to be part of a group of friends that enjoy all the aspects of food. Not only eating, but preparing, discussing, experimenting…oftentimes our parties become participatory foodfests, with everyone joining in to prepare and make some deliciously wonderful dish. Other times, we challenge each other to create a scrumptious feast from leftovers in the fridge. Every time the experience is amazing.
So we’ve decided to share with you our stories and recipes here. We hope you’ll find our recipes, stories and suggestions inspiring and fun. We want to encourage you to create your own food hang, whether it’s a 1-on-1 hang with a close friend, or a backyard hang on the deck with all your friends. And tell us your stories, share your recipes, and join us as we continue to spend time with good friends to eat, drink, and be…well…you know.
